I was flipping through the pages of Côte Est Magazine last night and dreaming I was on a ski trip holiday ensconced somewhere in a cozy chalet (dressed like Carrie Bradshaw with the Russian, no less) lounging near a crackling fire after a full day on the slopes.

Though a snowy mountain escape is a far cry from where we will be celebrating in sunny So Cal this Christmas, I did find this simple recipe I plan to make, a reminder of many ski trips and holidays past…

Côte Est Dec-Fev 2001-2002 smoked salmon and cream cheese/chive tartines as seen on linenandlavender.blogspot.com

...smoked salmon with cream cheese and chives on a rustic baguette.

Isn’t it interesting the memory associations we have?  For me, an image of smoked salmon (smoked salmon) sent me traveling to times and places and people I haven’t visited in ages…sleigh riding in the snow-covered mountains of my childhood and big groups of us piling into our vehicles to go to the local lifts...some idyllic romantic escapes surfaced too, nights in a hot tub with views of the stars in the crisp night sky and the twinkling lights of the village below us…good times.

Not in the cards for me this year though — smoked salmon and a trip down memory lane will have to do.

l&l Travels: Languedoc ~ La Mas Fougairolles

La Mas Fougairolles (The Farm Fougairolles) is located deep in the South of France in the beautiful province of Languedoc.

A cozy sofa for two in front of the fire at La Mas Fougairolles.

Rustic gray door with candle sconce beckons you to the charming kitchen.

A collection of antiques and vintage ware set the stage for your culinary creations.

The kitchen sink carved from blue granite stone.

The chestnut beamed ceiling and other original elements were carefully preserved by the owners.

The old bread oven now enveloped by Mother Nature.

A primitive weathered door guards the cellar treasures.

Flowers are cut from the farm's terraced garden where one can wander among the rosemary, lavender and jasmine or seek shade under the mature trees.

Crisp white linens and fresh flowers await in the bedrooms.

Vignettes of thoughtfully collected objects warm each room.

Old cremone handles cleverly employed as towel hooks.

A white clawfoot tub in the bath alongside a petite dressing table.

La Mas Fougairolles ancient stone facade nestled into the verdant countryside.

A panoramic view of the mountains from the terrace.

Local characters.

Beautiful scenery of  Cévennes National Park where you can hike, horseback ride, mountain bike, paraglide, or just walk and take in the sights:

An ancient sheep bridge near the farm.

A draped daybed nestled under a stone arch with views of the Cévennes.
