I was flipping through the pages of Côte Est Magazine last night and dreaming I was on a ski trip holiday ensconced somewhere in a cozy chalet (dressed like Carrie Bradshaw with the Russian, no less) lounging near a crackling fire after a full day on the slopes.

Though a snowy mountain escape is a far cry from where we will be celebrating in sunny So Cal this Christmas, I did find this simple recipe I plan to make, a reminder of many ski trips and holidays past…

Côte Est Dec-Fev 2001-2002 smoked salmon and cream cheese/chive tartines as seen on linenandlavender.blogspot.com

...smoked salmon with cream cheese and chives on a rustic baguette.

Isn’t it interesting the memory associations we have?  For me, an image of smoked salmon (smoked salmon) sent me traveling to times and places and people I haven’t visited in ages…sleigh riding in the snow-covered mountains of my childhood and big groups of us piling into our vehicles to go to the local lifts...some idyllic romantic escapes surfaced too, nights in a hot tub with views of the stars in the crisp night sky and the twinkling lights of the village below us…good times.

Not in the cards for me this year though — smoked salmon and a trip down memory lane will have to do.

A Classical Journey: The Houses of Ken Tate

"Human beings resonate with materials.  There is some kind of universal wisdom in the psyche that connects with the spirit of materials.  If you built the same house with new materials, the psyche would know the difference. The connection with the past would be lost.  You must use real materials as often as you can to create something that is more than a mere illusion.  I took a picture of an old Norman farmhouse to a quarry and asked, 'How can I get stone that looks like this?'  He told me we had to cut it from the face of a mountain.  So that's what we did." —Ken Tate

Paris Pied-À-Terre

Parisian apartment facade, iron railings.

This Parisian apartment's facade took my breath away when it came up on my screen.  The architectural detail aged to a beautiful patina. . .the weathered louvered shutters and the dark  wrought iron railings. . .I wouldn't change a thing.

"Paris Pied-À-Terre" from Restoration Hardware is one of seven recently released features showcasing their latest home furnishings and fixtures in scaled down sizes for smaller spaces:

Metal bed with traditional lines, white linens, design via Restoration Hardware.

.

Large gold mirror, ornate sconces on each side, console table, upholstered stool.

.

Parisian apartment living room - upholstered linen sofa and ottoman, crystal chandelier.

.

Exposed wood frame sofa with white linen upholstery, ornate crystal lights, gallery wall artwork.

.

Round table, single pedestal base, side chairs, crystal chandelier at center.

.

Bathroom vanity, metal frame, Venetian style wall mirror, sconces with fabric shades.

Please click the link below to see additional items from the "Paris Pied-À-Terre" collection and to peruse other new and beautiful offerings in a Victorian in San Francisco; -a farmhouse in Napa;  -a London townhouse;  -a loft in New York; -a brownstone in Boston and a bungalow in Los Angeles.   I'm headed back for a more thorough investigation myself.
Enjoy!
