Santa Barbara Day Trip - Part I

My mom recently came for a visit and she and Alex and I drove up the coast to Santa Barbara for the day, one of our favorite places to go for shopping, sightseeing and just a change of pace.

On a sunny day, it's a beautiful drive along the ocean and since it's on our way, we stopped in Malibu at John's Garden for our traditional to-go treat:  a deliciously decadent date shake.  (See end of post for location.)

Just prior to reaching Santa Barbara, you will see the signs for Santa Claus Lane.  I recalled an antique store located there so, on a whim, I exited to check out their latest inventory.  Unfortunately, it was no longer in business, but we were happy to discover a charming boutique called "Hummingbird."

John's Garden, Malibu      Great casual place for sandwiches, salads, smoothies and my favorite treat: the date shake.  A good place to get picnic provisions for a day at the beach or hiking in the canyon.  It's also a fun place to spend an afternoon.  You can eat at the picnic tables or on the lawn in the charming outdoor area and then shop at the surrounding clothing and home boutiques.

Source Sharing - A Must Have: The Little Black...

...Broom?(!)

Yes.  That's right.  I'm excited about a broom I found, not a little black dress.

I have to say, this is typical of me and I know my daughter would concur.  While I love clothes as much as the next girl...it isn't uncommon for me to head out in search of an outfit, only to become distracted by the antiques shop we've just passed.  My daughter will be immersed in the handbag section, only to turn and realize I've wandered off to check out rugs in the boutique next door.

That's not to say it's always something extravagant I'm interested in.  Case in point is this handmade fireplace broom for just $21 I found today via Remodelista .  I don't know exactly why it appeals to me so much, but I had to have it.  I can just see it hanging on my white wall as a piece of functional art.  Never mind that the fireplace I'm imagining it next to has yet to be installed.  (I'm in the middle of renovating a 1920's English cottage style home. – More on that in posts to come.)

In any event, I've already ordered the broom and though I might not have the perfect spot just yet, I knew I'd be happy owning it.  For some, inexplicable reason I felt a connection to a dark little fireplace broom and when you know, you just know.  —You know?!

Mora Clocks

The Gustavian gray clock shown in the recent post "The grays have it" is a Mora clock, so named because of their production location in the town of Mora (Sweden.)

They were produced from the late 18th century through most of the 19th century and eventually phased out due to competition from cheaper mass produced clocks originating in Germany and America.

I found the gray Mora for a client some years back and it remains one of my favorites for its simplistic design and beautiful gray finish. A good source for Mora clocks and other Swedish antiques is Avolli.  (Update:  Avolli is no longer dealing in antiques, but be sure to visit Tricia's blog via the link below.)

I recently visited the Avolli site and found this striking (no pun intended) Mora that is currently available along with several other options. The owner's name is Tricia Mitchell and she also writes a blog you might enjoy: Avolli

Her inventory is always changing, so if you are looking for something specific, be sure to send her an email and let her know.

Vet du vad klockan är? (Do you know what time it is?)...I'd say it's time to go antique shopping!
